Cesarean Delivery

The surgical birth of a baby through incisions made in the mother's uterus and abdominal wall is known as a cesarean section (C-section). C-sections can save the lives of women who are at risk of complications by preventing them from giving birth in a risky environment. Obstetricians, or physicians who treat pregnant patients before, during, and after delivery, as well as certain family doctors, do C-sections. C-sections cannot be performed by midwives. A doctor may choose to schedule a C-section if they believe giving delivery vaginally would be dangerous. A physician might arrange one if the unborn child is either transverse (sideways) or breech (feet- or bottom-first) in the womb (however some babies can be rotated before labor starts or delivered vaginally using special procedures)
